What are research peptides?

In one sentence. A peptide is a short chain of amino acids linked by peptide bonds; research-grade peptides are synthesized by solid-phase peptide synthesis (SPPS), purified by reversed-phase HPLC, and supplied as lyophilized powders for laboratory research.

Peptides sit between single amino acids and full proteins — typically 2 to 50 residues. For a research supplier, a peptide is defined by three properties a certificate can confirm: identity (the correct sequence and mass), purity (the proportion of target peptide versus process-related impurities), and stability (how the material holds up under defined storage). What is the difference between a peptide and a protein?
Both are chains of amino acids joined by peptide bonds. The distinction is one of length and convention: peptides are shorter — generally 2 to 50 residues — while proteins are longer and fold into stable three-dimensional structures. There is no hard boundary; the terms describe a continuum.
How is the identity of a peptide determined?
By electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS). The instrument measures the mass-to-charge ratio of the intact molecule, which is compared against the value predicted from the molecular formula. Agreement between observed and expected m/z confirms the compound is what it is claimed to be.
How is peptide purity measured?
By reversed-phase HPLC. The sample is separated over time and detected as a series of peaks. Purity is arithmetic: the target peak’s area expressed as a percentage of total peak area. A purity figure is meaningless without the method and column conditions that produced it.
What is a certificate of analysis (COA)?
A document recording a specific lot’s tested identity, purity, and related results against defined specifications. A COA is lot-specific — it describes one batch of material, not the compound in general.
How should lyophilized peptides be stored?
As supplied, lyophilized peptides are kept refrigerated and desiccated, protected from light. Once reconstituted, stability falls sharply: material is held at 2–8 °C and divided into aliquots to avoid repeated freeze–thaw cycles, which degrade peptides.
What does “Research Use Only” mean?
Research Use Only (RUO) means the material is supplied strictly for laboratory research. RUO materials are not drugs, foods, cosmetics, or medical devices; they are not approved for human or veterinary use, and must not be administered to humans or animals.
