How it works
A cold chain is an unbroken sequence of temperature-controlled steps. A gap at any point — a warm loading dock, a delayed courier — can matter more than the nominal storage temperature, because degradation is cumulative and often invisible.
What “cold” means depends on the material and its form. A lyophilized (freeze-dried) powder is generally more stable than a solution, which is one reason peptides are supplied dry; the storage condition stated on a compound page is the condition the material was characterized to hold.
Cold-chain handling preserves identity and purity, it does not change them. It prevents the loss of what the analytical methods already measured; it does not improve a material.
Why it matters
The certificate describes the material as tested. If the cold chain breaks, the material that arrives may no longer match its certificate — not because the testing was wrong, but because the material changed in transit.
Handling guidance is where characterization meets logistics: molecular weight and purity are measured once, but they are only preserved by storage and shipping that respect the material’s stated conditions.
