How it works
A reference material comes with its characterization — identity and purity established by analytical methods and recorded so the material can be used as a point of comparison. The documentation is part of the material, not an optional extra.
Characterization is specific and measured, not asserted. Identity is confirmed by ESI-MS against the mass computed from the formula; purity is measured by RP-HPLC and reported per lot. The record is what lets one material stand as a reference for another.
“Reference material” is a supply-and-documentation concept, not a use instruction. It describes how a material is characterized and provided, and says nothing about what may be done with it.
Why it matters
The value of a reference material is only as good as its characterization. A substance without a documented, measured identity and purity is not a reference for anything, which is why the certificate travels with the material.
Because characterization is per lot, using a material as a reference means using its lot record — the same reason purity and identity are reported against a lot number rather than a product name.
